As a former journalist, I am excited to author my first blog. I hope to engage readers in an interesting back and forth dialogue on a wide range of topics and current events that shape our world.  We will delve into controversial public relations and public affairs issues; the need for individuals and corporations to practice ethical behavior and accept accountability when they don't; examine the powerful role both traditional and non-traditional media play in influencing society; and offer perspective on the changing marketing landscape both here and abroad.

Later this week I will tackle my first topic: How Duke University has thoroughly mismanaged its reputation in responding to the alleged rape case involving members of its lacrosse team.

Next week I will tackle the almost comical finger-pointing taking place between a well respected international PR firm and its former L.A. office head who is currently on trial over who was responsible and knew of the over billing of fees being collected by the PR firm from its client -- a public works department within the City of Angels. As I mentioned, responsibility and accountability will be topics of this blog ... stay tuned and I welcome your feedback and participation in what should be fun and engaging dialogue.

Hi Richard, What I find promising in your first post is that you propose a clear conversational model... essentially you say: "I will speak once a week and would like for you to respond."

You're clear about what this model will look like and what your role will be and this kind of direction will cement the conversational aspects in the minds of your readers.

Also looking forward to your read on the Duke rape case.

What I don't find compelling in your first post is:

      >>2 too-long paragraphs

      >>a sense that you're starting cold in your writing, that you're not yet reading anyone in the PR industry.

A mention of those whose thought you read and admire would indicate to me that you're not only going to be engaging me, but the other thinkers in your space.

        Garrett,

Points well taken and I appreciate your feedback.

As for those in our industry whom I admire, there are many. Richard Edelman (Edelman PR), Lou Capozzi (Publicis), Jay Chiat (TBWA Chiat Day) and Paul Holmes (the Holmes Report) are just a few that come immediately to mind.

I hope you find my analysis of the Duke case interesting.

        Rick
